Welcome to Norges Gyllenlærlaug
Home

The Guild of Norwegian Gilt Leather Makers was established in October 1992.
The purpose of Norges Gyllenlærlaug is to preserve the old craft of making gilt leather, and to promote the knowledge of the necessary skills to the members of the guild.
The Board of the Guild consists of the following:

  • Master of the Guild
  • Deputy Master
  • Treasurer
  • Secretary
  • 1 Member
  • 2 Deputy Members

The Board presently has 3 District Contacts acting as links between the Board and the members.
The Guild has 130 members in Norway, including 5 Honorary Members.

The Guild is at present collecting detailed information on gilt leather works in Norway, and at the same time building up an overview of European gilt leather collections. Members of the Guild collect information through literature studies, and contact with museums and collections in different countries. The results will be published on our home page and in the Guild’s leaflet. The Guild issues a quarterly leaflet that is distributed to the members.

Members completing a training course, followed by extensive practice under the leadership of an authorized instructor, can participate in a qualifying examination organized by the Guild.
Each candidate must personally make 4 items of gilt leatherworks as determined by the Guild. Norges Gyllenlærlaug awards candidates passing the test the title “Gilt Leather Maker approved by Norges Gyllenlærlaug”.

An approved Gilt Leather Maker is authorized to instruct students in the art of making gilt leather.
44 members have been awarded this title, of which 15 are presently giving courses.

The Guild solicits information on gilt leather collections in other countries, and welcomes all contacts and inquiries about the Guild and its activities.
